Life of a Well Luncheon set for Oct. 27

Oct 12, 2016

The “Life of a Well” luncheon, presented by Smith Mason & Co founder Randy Smith, is a simplified explanation of the life cycle of a well. Its target audience is non-technical energy industry employees and those who want to understand more about the various phases of oil and gas exploration and production. The luncheon, part of the Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Exposition’s Education and Innovation Summit, is Thursday, Oct. 27, from noon – 1:30 p.m. The summit is Oct. 26-27 at the Cajundome Convention Center.

“You don’t have to be an engineer or a geologist to understand this presentation,” says Angela Cring, executive director of LAGCOE. “We are excited to welcome those who provide services to the oil and gas industry and want to know more about it.”

Smith and Larry Schmermund, who is chief operating officer of Smith Mason & Co, which is sponsoring the luncheon, will explain the many moving parts of a well from conception to production and beyond. The engaging discussion aims to show the importance of safe and efficient operations and how they impact the industry.

Smith began his career in Natchez, Miss., on workover rigs and during the summers did pipeline jobs for both land and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. He graduated from Delta State University with a degree in biology and worked four years in Iran with SEDCO on land rigs as a roughneck, derrick hand, assistant driller and driller. He also taught drilling and well control worldwide for SEDCO. In 1986 he started Randy Smith Training Solutions, teaching well control, stuck pipe prevention, drilling technology and safety leadership in more than 40 countries. In 2014 he founded the safety and leadership company Smith Mason & Co.

Schmermund has more than 43 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He began his career working on offshore drilling rigs as a roustabout and in 1986 was promoted to rig move engineer. After running his own business for 15 years, Schmermund joined Randy Smith Training Solutions in 2006 as the worldwide marine training manager and in 2008 assumed the additional role of technical training manager for North America. In 2014 he became COO for Smith Mason & Co, overseeing operations in the U.S., Middle East and South America.
