J.P. Owen was the son of J.P. Owen snr of the Owen Drilling Co. He began assisting his father at a young age in the oil and gas industry and picked it up as a career as he grew older. After the death of his father, he became the chairman of Owen Drilling Co. He earned the Lagcoe Looey title in 1967.
