Laborde entered the family business not long before the 2014 decline and he describes the years since as “educational.” He says that in spite of the challenging market conditions, the company has been actively chasing higher utilization for its fleet, including outside of traditional oil and gas work. “This equipment deteriorates so quickly if it sits on the side. So we want to keep our crews employed, engines lubed, and vessels in the water.”

There are few families that can claim to have had a bigger impact on the oil and gas industry than Labordes. Their contributions to the development of offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico are hard to overstate — their achievements in rig and vessel design have been recognized at the highest levels and recorded in history books. And today, their children and grandchildren are carrying on that pioneering legacy amid the challenges of today’s low-price environment, still thriving decades after others have faltered. Their secret? Tons of experience and a contrarian spirit.

You might say James “Jim” Justiss III was born with oil in his blood. His grandfather, James “Jick” Justiss Sr. started out as a muleskinner in the 1920s, moving oil and gas equipment in South Arkansas during the El Dorado boom. Jick was noticed by legendary Texas oilman H.L. Hunt, and would end up working for Hunt for many years managing his field operations. With that experience and a partner, Jick Justiss founded the Justiss-Mears Oil Company in Jena in 1946. The business thrived over the years and eventually his son James Justiss Jr. began working for the company — first as roughneck and toolpusher and later as president. Times were good during the late 1970s: two key acquisitions (Baker Tank Company and Altech) brought new oilfield vessel manufacturing capacity online and the company had 28 active drilling rigs. In 1980, Jick Justiss passed away and the Mears family opted to sell their share of the business, which was renamed Justiss Oil Company. The crash that rocked the industry in 1982 was a major challenge, but Jim Justiss Jr. managed to keep the business on track. Then, in 1990, Jim Justiss III joined the company as a geologist, eventually serving as VP of operations for many years. In 2013, he was named president, while his father became chairman of the board.

This article is the first in a series that will offer a closer look at some of the Louisiana businesses that have made a lasting impact on the oil and gas industry. Family-owned businesses have been at the heart of the oil and gas industry for as long as its existed in Louisiana and the Gulf South. So many of today’s success stories began with just a man, a boat and a dream. Not all of them made it of course, but those that did have created a lasting legacy that’s still a vital part of the economic strength of the state. Despite the heady highs and devastating lows, many family-owned companies have endured and are now in the care of second, third and even fourth generations.
